Men’s Issues
Although men and women overlap with the kinds of issues they present in therapy, I have found that some men will be more comfortable dealing with a man and seeking out a male therapist rather than seeing a female therapist. (To be fair, the reverse is at last equally so, to be sure.)
Nevertheless, I feel I can and have worked well with men who want assistance with:
- Relationship, communication, sexual issues of all sorts
- Anger control/anger management
- Social skill development and social anxiety
- Dealing with difficult people, especially in the workplace
- Creating a work/life balance. This may present as whether/how to transition from a current salaried high-paying job to starting one’s own company, often while having to raise a young family with a partner who also works to support their Silicon Valley lifestyle.
When I am successful with these men, I suspect some of it can be attributed to gender, but my skill level in this area also plays a part. However, choosing a male therapist helps a male client’s original buy-in to the very process of therapy, which he can then turn into a win by supplying more motivation to work hard to relieve his symptoms, stress and problems.
