Psychotherapy Approach

Psychotherapy Approach

My therapeutic style is primarily cognitive-behavioral focusing on behavior change and turning one’s negative, dysfunctional thoughts into more positive, functional ones. This treatment approach is perhaps best illustrated in the hugely practical best-selling book Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy by David Burns,M.D.

I also have training and therapy experience working with alcohol, codependency, substance abuse and other addictions. Naturally, I encourage the 12 step approach/philosophy, but with my years of experience in this field, I recognize that one size doesn’t fit all, and will work to collaborate/customize a program that makes clinical and emotional sense for the client.

I also have specialized training with the Imago Relationship Therapy developed by Harville Hendrix, Ph.D. Sometimes couples who have read his books: Getting the Love You Want: A Guide for Couples and Keeping the Love You Find: A Personal Guide will follow-up their readings by scheduling couples therapy with me.

Finally, I am directive as a therapist and will both listen and provide constructive feedback, especially when invited to do so. Ultimately you are selecting me as a therapist for my professional skills and judgment. This is not to say that I will tell you what to do, but I am active in the therapeutic process, and confident that I will add value by listening to you, and acknowledging your pain, stress, problems, or worries.

In addition to providing listening and attention to you and your story, I may help clarify or frame an issue for better understanding. In general though, my approach would be to more often provide concrete practical ways to resolve the problem. Often, it may involve reducing one’s expectations about the matter, some serenity prayer-like acceptance of the problem and/or emotionally supporting you through the very hard place of making that decision and dealing with the aftermath of that decision.

Length of Treatment

My treatment approach is quite geared for short-term intensive work of 10 sessions or less. However, I am flexible with my work and can also accommodate those clients who desire a longer-term therapeutic relationship which might last up to several years. I am committed to keeping the dialogue open as to whether our sessions are meeting your goals, and to adapt and change as conditions of your life evolve. Open communication is critical to success in the therapy room as well as to the world outside the therapy office.
